NHIS, just like any organization in Nigeria has been hit with corruption allegations! This was made public by Health Monitor Alliance, a health-based advocacy group when they accused the acting executive secretary of the National Health Insurance
Scheme (NHIS), Femi Akingbade, of corrupt practices since he took over
the affairs of the scheme about a year ago.
In a statement signed by its coordinator, Abubakar Umar, the group
alleged the NHIS boss of breach of contract involving some staff of the
organization in a bid to replace them.
The group maintained that Akingbade’s actions had flouted a court
order asking him to pay the sum of four hundred and forty-four thousand
Naira (N440, 000,000.00) due to the Company for the last quarter of
2015.
The statement reads: “Recently, the acting secretary has embarked
on a vendetta aimed at removing or terminating the contract of
performing contractors and replacing them with contractors and companies
to which he has close links.”
“This is a man who has no experience, practice or expertise in
health or in health insurance. The mismatch of his background and the
aims and objectives of the NHIS has resulted in an ongoing ‘purge’ in
the Scheme.”
